Procalcitonin test is used to measure the levels of procalcitonin in the blood. Secreted by the thyroid gland, usually in response to bacterial infections or tissue injury, Procalcitonin levels may increase when systemic bacterial infections and sepsis are present. This test helps identify sepsis or another serious bacterial infections in their early stages, prompting treatment and avoiding life-threatening complications. Measuring levels of procalcitonin is also useful in determining whether the infection is of bacterial or viral origin and the response of the person to the treatment.

faqFrequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How is the blood sample taken?

To take the blood sample, a tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins and it becomes easy to collect the blood. The skin is cleaned before inserting the needle in the vein in order to prevent bacteria from entering. Needle is inserted into the vein of the arm and the blood sample is collected in the vacutainer.

Why is the test performed?

This test is performed if the person experiences fever, breathlessness and is also performed in case of severe bacterial or fungal infections, burns, injury, kidney infections, pancreatitis, sepsis, infections of the gut or brain.

What is Sepsis?

Sepsis is a life-threatening illness caused by body's response to an infection. Sepsis occurs when chemicals released in the blood to fight infection trigger inflammation in the body. This may lead to a cascade of changes that damage multiple organ systems, leading them to fail, sometimes even resulting in death.

What are the symptoms of Sepsis?

The symptoms of sepsis include: low blood pressure, chills, dizziness, fatigue, fever, flushing, low body temperature, shivering, fast breathing shortness of breath, delirium, fast heart rate, insufficient urine production, organ dysfunction, skin discolouration, sleepiness.
