The platelet count helps to determine the number of platelets in the blood. It helps to screen, diagnose, or monitor the conditions that affect the number of platelets. In adults, the normal platelet count range varies from 150,000 to 450,000 platelets per microliter of blood.

How is the blood sample taken?
To take the blood sample, a tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is asked to make a fist. This helps in the buildup of blood filling the veins and it becomes easy to collect the blood. The skin is cleaned before inserting the needle in the vein in order to prevent bacteria from entering. The needle is then inserted into the vein in the arm and the blood sample is collected in the vacutainer.

The platelets play an important role in normal blood clotting.
How do platelets help to clot blood?
Whenever there is any injury, the platelets adhere to the injury site, aggregate together with the platelets, and release chemicals that help in causing aggregation of other platelets.

Giant platelets term is used for those platelets which are abnormally large. They might be seen in disorders like immune thrombocytopenic purpura and in rare inherited disorders such as Bernard-Soulier disease.
