Q: How is the blood sample taken?

A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm to take the blood sample. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins, making it easy to collect the blood. The skin is cleaned before inserting the needle in the vein to prevent bacteria from entering. Needle is inserted into the vein of the arm and the blood sample is collected in the vacutainer.

This test is used to detect the dengue virus or antibodies produced in response to dengue infection. Dengue fever is a viral disease that is transmitted by mosquitoes to humans. According to the WHO (World Health Organization), dengue is a fast-emerging infectious disease. The primary symptoms of dengue fever include sudden high fever and flu-like symptoms that develop about 4 to 7 days after being bitten by a dengue mosquito. Other signs and symptoms include severe headache, joint and muscle pain, vomiting, nausea, skin rash and swollen glands. If dengue is not treated, it can become worse and become fatal.
