This test is used to detect the dengue virus or antibodies produced in response to dengue infection. Dengue fever is a viral disease that is transmitted by mosquitoes to humans. According to the WHO (World Health Organization), dengue is a fast-emerging infectious disease. More than 100 countries have reported dengue infections as per CDC (Centres for Disease Control and Prevention). The primary symptoms of dengue fever include sudden high fever and flu-like symptoms that develop about 4 to 7 days after being bitten by a dengue mosquito. Other signs and symptoms include severe headache, joint and muscle pain, vomiting, nausea, skin rash and swollen glands. If dengue is not treated, it can become worse and become fatal.

faqFrequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How is the blood sample taken?

A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm to take the blood sample. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins, making it easy to collect the blood. The skin is cleaned before inserting the needle in the vein to prevent bacteria from entering. Needle is inserted into the vein of the arm and the blood sample is collected in the vacutainer.

What are the symptoms of Dengue virus infection?

It has been reported that symptomatic patients with Dengue infection experienced fever, severe musculoskeletal pain, retro-orbital pain, headache, and a transient macular rash, most often observed in children. Young adults and children are at increased risk of developing dengue haemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome, especially after been infected with a new Dengue virus serotype repeatedly.

Is there any vaccine available for dengue virus infection?

As of now, there is no vaccine available for dengue virus infection.

Do we have any specific treatment for dengue?

There is no specific treatment or medicine for dengue. Most people infected with the dengue virus recover within two weeks. Drinking lots of fluids, resting and taking few medications under the guidance of a doctor might help. However, people with serious dengue infections are advised to visit the nearby hospital and get fluids recommended by the doctor.
