While we often turn to air conditioning and cold drinks to beat the summer heat, our diet can also play a crucial role in regulating our body temperature. Research shows consuming certain foods can help us stay cool and comfortable during the hot summer months. While some of these foods contain high water content and electrolytes, others have cooling properties that can lower body temperature. In this article, let’s explore some foods that are scientifically proven to help keep you cool during summer.
1. Peppermint
It is a herb known for its cooling and refreshing properties. Thanks to its high menthol content, peppermint has a cooling effect on the body even during hot summer days. One way to enjoy the benefits of peppermint is to make a hot or iced peppermint tea and sip it throughout the day. While it may seem counterintuitive to drink a hot beverage in the heat, consuming hot drinks can actually cause your body to sweat more, which can help cool you down.
2. Yoghurt
Yoghurt has a cooling effect on the body. It can help regulate body temperature and reduce internal heat. Additionally, yoghurt is high in water content, which can help keep you hydrated and cool. The probiotics in yoghurt also help regulate digestion and promote a healthy gut, which can help improve overall health and well-being during the summer months. When chilled, yoghurt can be a refreshing snack or a base for smoothies or dips. Try adding some fresh fruit or granola to your yoghurt and enjoy this cooling treat.
3. Corn
Corns are rich in antioxidants such as lutein and zeaxanthin, which are known to provide protection against harmful ultraviolet rays. Corns are also high in fibre and provide energy during hot summer days. You can try corn on the cob or add some lemon and salt to it.
4. Watermelon
It is a delicious and refreshing fruit that can help you stay cool and hydrated during the hot summer months. It's made up of 92% water and is also loaded with antioxidants, which can provide a long-lasting cooling effect on your body. Other melons, such as cantaloupe and honeydew, are also great options to help cool your body and keep you hydrated.
5. Cucumber
Since they are made up of approximately 96% water, cucumbers can provide you with optimal hydration, which is essential for regulating body temperature and staying cool. In addition, cucumbers are rich in vitamins B & C and minerals such as copper, phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium and are low in calories.
These foods can help regulate your body temperature and keep you refreshed. So, be sure to add these delicious and nutritious options to your summer menu and enjoy a healthy and cool season.
