An absolute eosinophil count test helps to measure the number of eosinophils. This test helps to detect infections, allergic diseases, and other medical conditions.
An absolute eosinophil count is done:
• As a routine check-up
• In case of parasitic infections
• In case of signs and symptoms of allergy such as redness of eyes, itchy eyes, coughing, nasal congestion, asthma, dermatitis, or abdominal pain
• To detect early stages of Cushing’s disease
• To detect syndrome such as acute hypereosinophilic syndrome
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How is the blood sample taken?
To take the blood sample, a tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is asked to make a fist. This helps in the buildup of blood filling the veins and it becomes easy to collect the blood. The skin is cleaned before inserting the needle in the vein in order to prevent bacteria from entering. The needle is then inserted into the vein in the arm and the blood sample is collected in the vacutainer.
What is an eosinophil?
Eosinophil is a specialized immune cell of the immune system.
What is the function of an eosinophil?
The function of an eosinophil is to move inflamed areas, trap substances, act against parasites and bacteria, participate in immediate allergic reactions, and modulate inflammatory responses.
What is a hypereosinophilic syndrome?
Hypereosinophilic syndrome is a disorder in which the number of eosinophils rises to more than 1500 cells per microliter of blood.
What are the signs and symptoms of hypereosinophilic syndrome?
The signs and symptoms of the hypereosinophilic syndrome include weight loss, fever, fatigue, night sweats, cough, swelling, stomach ache, rashes, pain, confusion, weakness, and coma.
